About/Introduction
I am a mature student wishing to continue my studies.
Since a very young age, I have been involved in many creative projects as a hobby.
During my school years I commenced working in different fields like design technology, drawing and painting. As I grew, my interest developed further into carpentry/design technology which I did my A levels in the college of further education.
Due to the lack of educational opportunity for further studies in Gibraltar, I went on to do a two year site carpentry training at the Gibraltar Training Centre. Seeing that this was not really what I wanted, I additionally did an equivalent AS Level in fine carpentry in Spain, parallel to the training scheme in Gib. Here I learnt a great deal in means of computer aided design and 3D modelling. In this course I was able to design and then make the piece, which included use of CNC Machinery. Although I was unable to unable to finish the second year, here I found my real vocation and a huge amount of more specialized knowledge.
Noticing a diminished source of props, in the ‘local’ theatre world, I began to specialize in Prop making.
I developed this skill to the point that friends began to commission me for work. It was at this time that I saw the potential in the skills that I had assembled.
Using my skills in CAD, enabled me to flesh out designs and details quickly, without the distraction of needing a large drawing surface to make the plans
Knowing the construction techniques of both Bench and Site carpentry, allows me to be able to understand the construction of many props along with the stresses involved in the use of the prop.
Although I would use CAD to create a 2 and or 3D Model, I noticed that it would not show all the elements of the project. An example of this would be the anthropometric aspect of the project. The relation of the project to the human body is a leap of faith in a 2D world on the Computer. As such I would ultimately create a final plan in paper, showing all elevations, of the project at a Scale of 1:1. This allowed me to be able to gauge the proportions of the prop in relation to my clients or myself.
I also did research on construction methods used in actual weapons, thereby aiding me in construction of better built and sturdier Props.
